As TimkenSteel Corporation's Market Cap (NYSE:TMST) Drops to US$744m, Insiders Might Be Questioning Their Decision to Buy Earlier This Year

Simply Wall St ·  Aug 20, 2022 08:50

Insiders who acquired US$866k worth of TimkenSteel Corporation's (NYSE:TMST) stock at an average price of US$16.34 in the past 12 months may be dismayed by the recent 8.7% price decline. Insiders invest with the hopes of seeing their money grow in value over time. However, as a result of recent losses, their initial investment is now only worth US$853k, which is not what they expected.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At TimkenSteel

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Independent Director Kenneth Garcia bought US$469k worth of shares at a price of US$17.93 per share. That means that even when the share price was higher than US$16.10 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock when an insider has bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price. The only individual insider to buy over the last year was Kenneth Garcia.

Kenneth Garcia bought a total of 53.00k shares over the year at an average price of US$16.34. Insider Ownership Of TimkenSteel

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Insiders own 1.7% of TimkenSteel shares, worth about US$13m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
