05:58 AM EDT, 08/18/2022 (MT Newswires) -- The Nikkei 225 opened lower on Wall Street cues and could not recover, finishing down 1% on Thursday as traders booked profits from recent rallies.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 declined 280.63 to 28,942.14, as losing issues outnumbered gainers 178 to 43.
Leading the upside on a down day were Nippon Sheet Glass (NPSGY, 5202:Tokyo), up 5.3%, followed by industrial-machinery maker Hitachi Zosen (7004:Tokyo), up 3.4%, and then beverage house Sapporo (SOOBF, 2501:Tokyo), up 2%.
On the downside were Yamaha (7951:Tokyo), off 2.8%, and then staffing agency Recruit (RCRRF, 6098:Tokyo), off 2.7%.
In other news, Tokyo officials recorded 27,453 COVID-19 infections on Thursday, after reporting 29,416 cases on Wednesday, reported The Mainichi newspaper. The capital city is in its seventh wave of COVID-19 infections.
