It might seem bad, but the worst that can happen when you buy a stock (without leverage) is that its share price goes to zero. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For example, the Guizhou Space Appliance Co., LTD (SZSE:002025) share price has soared 155% in the last three years. How nice for those who held the stock! The last week saw the share price soften some 2.8%.

Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Guizhou Space Appliance was able to grow its EPS at 10% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. In comparison, the 37% per year gain in the share price outpaces the EPS growth. This suggests that, as the business progressed over the last few years, it gained the confidence of market participants. It is quite common to see investors become enamoured with a business, after a few years of solid progress. This favorable sentiment is reflected in its (fairly optimistic) P/E ratio of 54.06.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Guizhou Space Appliance, it has a TSR of 159% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Pleasingly, Guizhou Space Appliance's total shareholder return last year was 29%. That includes the value of the dividend. But the three year TSR of 37% per year is even better. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Guizhou Space Appliance better, we need to consider many other factors.
