For Universal Display Corporation (NASDAQ:OLED) insiders, selling US$8.2m worth of stock earlier this year was a smart move.

Simply Wall St ·  May 18, 2022 08:46

Even though Universal Display Corporation (NASDAQ:OLED) stock gained 3.1% last week, insiders who sold US$8.2m worth of stock over the past year are probably better off. Holding on to stock would have meant their investment would be worth less now than it was at the time of sale. Thus selling at an average price of US$207, which is higher than the current price, may have been the best decision.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Universal Display

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Independent Director, Lawrence Lacerte, for US$5.2m worth of shares, at about US$209 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$128). So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.

Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It's great to see that Universal Display insiders own 7.8% of the company, worth about US$454m. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.

So What Do The Universal Display Insider Transactions Indicate?

The fact that there have been no Universal Display insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us.
