Trading Hours
As of my last update in 2023, here are the typical trading hours for Bursa Malaysia:
Morning Session: 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM (Malaysia Time, GMT+8)
Afternoon Session: 2:30 PM to 4:45 PM (Malaysia Time, GMT+8)
These hours apply from Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays and other market holidays.
Pre-Opening and Pre-Closing Phases
Pre-Opening Session: Starts at 8:30 AM where orders can be entered, modified, or withdrawn but no matching of orders occurs until the market opens.
Pre-Closing Session: Takes place in the last 10 minutes of the afternoon session, from 4:35 PM to 4:45 PM, where orders can be entered and matched at a calculated closing price.
Trading Rules
Price Limits:
Bursa Malaysia has price limits to prevent excessive volatility. Stocks and warrants can only move within a range of their previous closing price by a percentage determined by the exchange.
Short Selling:
Regulated short selling is allowed but with strict rules. Investors need to confirm the availability of stocks for shorting and adhere to reporting requirements and other regulations.
Circuit Breakers:
The exchange has mechanisms like circuit breakers to temporarily halt trading if a stock or the overall market moves by an excessive percentage. These are designed to curb market volatility and give investors time to digest information.
Minimum Bid Size:
The bid size varies according to the price of the stock. Lower-priced stocks have smaller bid sizes, and this changes as the stock price increases.
Disclosure Requirements:
Investors who acquire or dispose of a substantial quantity of shares (ordinarily 5% of voting shares) must disclose their transactions to the respective companies and to Bursa Malaysia.
Day Trading:
Day trading is possible, but it's essential to understand the brokerage fees and the impact of each transaction on your potential profits.
