About Moomoo
What is a Bursa IPO in Malaysia?
Bursa IPO refers to an Initial Public Offering (IPO) on Bursa Malaysia, the Malaysian stock exchange. It's the process where a privately-held company offers its shares to the public for the first time, transitioning into a publicly traded company. Bursa Malaysia has two main markets for IPOs: the Main Market for established companies and the ACE Market for growth-oriented companies.
Why do companies in Malaysia go for an IPO?
Companies go for an IPO for several key reasons: Capital Raising: IPOs help pay off debt or finance growth without using personal funds. Liquidity Creation: Public trading allows major shareholders to sell stock or use it as loan collateral. Realistic Valuation: Public trading establishes market-driven share prices, providing clear ownership value. Prestige Gain: Regulations for public companies signal respectability and good management. These factors make IPOs an attractive option for growing businesses seeking funding, flexibility, and recognition.
What are the criteria for a company to list on Bursa Malaysia through an IPO?
Bursa Malaysia offers a choice of three markets to companies seeking for listing in Malaysia: MAIN Market is a prime market for established companies that have met the standards in terms of quality, size and operations. Potential issuers for the Main Market must demonstrate that they have achieved minimum profit track record or minimum size measured by market capitalization; ACE Market is a sponsor-driven market designed for companies with growth prospects. It was formerly known as the MESDAQ Market prior to 3 August 2009. Sponsors must assess suitability of the potential issuers, taking into consideration attributes such as business prospects, corporate conduct and adequacy of internal control. Main Market and ACE Market provide companies with greater visibility via the capital market and a clearly defined platform to raise funds from both institutional and retail investors; and LEAP Market is an adviser-driven market which aims to provide emerging companies, including small- and medium-sized enterprises with greater fund raising access and visibility via the capital market. It is accessible only to sophisticated investors (as prescribed under the Capital Markets and Services Act 2007).
Why is an IPO important for a company in Malaysia?
Because it is raising money from the investing public, an IPO can increase the company's prestige and public image, which can help the company get better terms from lenders as well as boost sales and profits. Another reason for doing an IPO is to allow early investors to sell some or all of their shares in the company.
