Technically lump sum deposit, because you never know where the bottom is and when it will reverse. S&P could continue down or bounce back up from earning season. However, not everyone has a "sudden" large sum of money to invest. Most ppl would deposit a small % of their income every month. Which is DCA.
Is there an international ETF that is inclusive of US and all international developing and emerging markets? Like a global S&P 500 ETF that includes the top 500 companies worldwide by market cap? Before someone says 'just buy$VANGUARD FTSE CDN HIGH DIVID YIELD TRUST UNIT(VDY.CA)$' that includes almost 2000 individual holdings. I'm looking for an ETF with only top 500/100.$S&P 500 Index(.SPX.US)$$SPDR S&P 500 ETF(SPY.US)$
45%- $VANGUARD INVESTMENTS CANADA INC S&P 500 INDEX ETF(VFV.CA)$ 35%- $ISHARES S&P/TSX 60 INDEX ETF UNIT(XIU.CA)$ 20%- $VANGUARD FTSE CDN HIGH DIVID YIELD TRUST UNIT(VDY.CA)$
Leaving this alone for the time being. Will probably add some individual growth stocks in the next year or so. Or maybe even another growth ETF.
Going to be making a big purchase of XEQT soon due to rebalancing/consolidating my investments.
I’ve never made even close to such a large trade. I’m concerned about getting boned by the bid/ask spread.
Is that a concern? Should I do a limit order? Or several smaller orders? $ISHARES S&P/TSX 60 INDEX ETF UNIT(XIU.CA)$ $VANGUARD INVESTMENTS CANADA INC S&P 500 INDEX ETF(VFV.CA)$
My current strategy:
invest 75% in high yielding dividend ETFs (i.e. $VANGUARD FTSE CDN HIGH DIVID YIELD TRUST UNIT(VDY.CA)$ ) so that I have low risk and am growing my portfolio from dividends
gamble 2% on an individual stock
invest the remaining 23% in higher growth ETFs (i.e. $VANGUARD INVESTMENTS CANADA INC S&P 500 INDEX ETF(VFV.CA)$ or $ISHARES CORE EQUITY ETF PORTFOLIO UNITS CAD(XEQT.CA)$ )...
Here are 2 index funds I buy every month that allow me to sleep well at night: $VANGUARD INVESTMENTS CANADA INC S&P 500 INDEX ETF(VFV.CA)$ $VANGUARD FTSE CDN HIGH DIVID YIELD TRUST UNIT(VDY.CA)$ $ISHARES S&P/TSX 60 INDEX ETF UNIT(XIU.CA)$
A) Lump Sum Investment
B) Dollar Cost Average
What would it be? For context let’s say we’re referring to an S&P500 investment. $S&P 500 Index(.SPX.US)$ $VANGUARD INVESTMENTS CANADA INC S&P 500 INDEX ETF(VFV.CA)$ $VANGUARD FTSE CDN HIGH DIVID YIELD TRUST UNIT(VDY.CA)$ $ISHARES S&P/TSX 60 INDEX ETF UNIT(XIU.CA)$
Thank you for $VANGUARD FTSE CDN HIGH DIVID YIELD TRUST UNIT(VDY.CA)$ & $VANGUARD INVESTMENTS CANADA INC S&P 500 INDEX ETF(VFV.CA)$ . It's one of the best ETFs for buying and holding long term. Don't know what I'd do without it.
Sincerely,
The "average" investor
