The S & P 500 rose sharply on Thursday, its biggest one-day percentage gain since early March, as companies such as Morgan Stanley and UnitedHealth Group Inc climbed after reporting strong results, while employment and inflation data eased concerns about the prospect of raising interest rates. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 534.75 points, or 1.56%, to 34912.56; the s & p 500 rose 74.46, or 1.71%, to 4438.26; and the Nasdaq rose 251.79, or 1.73%, to 14823.43.
