万豪国际集团净零排放目标取得里程碑进展

Marriott International's net zero emissions target has reached a milestone

PR Newswire ·  Apr 23 00:16

BETHESDA, MD, April 23, 2024/PRNewswire/ -- Recently, Marriott International Group (NASDAQ: MAR) received approval from the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) for short- and long-term emission reduction targets based on science. The Scientific Carbon Targets Initiative (SBTi) is a global climate action organization that helps companies determine scientific greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets based on data-driven methodologies. Marriott International Group is a major international hotel management company that has been approved for short- and long-term emission reduction targets based on science around the world.

Marriott International has committed to reducing absolute greenhouse gas emissions of Scope 1 (directly generated greenhouse gas emissions) and Scope 2 (indirect greenhouse gas emissions from energy purchases by companies) by 2030 by 46.2% compared to the 2019 base year. Marriott also promised to reduce absolute Scope 3 (indirect greenhouse gas emissions generated in the corporate value chain) greenhouse gas emissions from fuel and energy-related activities, waste from operations, and employee commuting and franchising by 2030 compared to the 2019 base year. Furthermore, the Group plans that by 2028, 22% of suppliers — emissions from areas such as procurement of goods and services, capital goods, and upstream transportation and distribution — will set science-based carbon reduction targets.

Marriott International is also committed to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions in its value chain by 2050, reducing absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 90% compared to the base year 2019, and also reducing absolute Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 90%. This target boundary includes land-related carbon emissions and the reduction of bioenergy feedstocks.

Highlights of the Group's recent sustainability initiatives include:

  • Launch the Climate Action Plan (CAP), which will plan future growth by building climate knowledge, addressing climate risks, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the organization.
  • Set carbon reduction and energy efficiency targets for all managed and franchised hotels around the world.
  • Strengthen the Marriott Environmental and Sustainability Center Platform (MESH), a global platform that monitors and manages the monthly electricity, water consumption, and waste recorded by hotels. Through enhanced functionality, hotels can easily obtain customized and targeted carbon reduction and energy consumption data.
  • Introducing energy optimization programs to help hotels manage rising energy costs. The program helps hotels conduct energy audits and discover ways to be more efficient.
  • Work with suppliers to help them understand and reduce carbon emissions.
  • Share sustainability information on Marriots.com, including carbon footprint data for individual hotels.

Marriott's sustainability strategy includes strategies such as designing resource-saving hotels, introducing technology to track and reduce energy and water consumption and waste and food waste, increasing renewable energy usage, managing water risks, promoting hotel participation in third-party sustainability certifications, supporting innovative ecosystem restoration initiatives, and implementing responsible and local procurement.
