After Messi joined the Paris Saint-Germain Club (PSG), PSG announced that part of Messi's salary would be paid in digital currency.

According to multiple sources, Messi signed a two-year contract with PSG this week with the option of renewing it for a third year, which will bring his annual salary to $41 million (35 million euros), plus a signing fee of $30 million and other bonuses.

PSG said Thursday that Messi's "pay package" also includes the cryptocurrency "$PSG Fan Tokens".

After the news, $PSG rebounded. The digital currency was created by encryption platform Socios.com in January 2020 to help PSG build a new fan community.

PSG claims that the move to pay Messi in digital currency has also led to the positioning of the young club as "one of the most innovative and avant-garde brands in the world of sports".

Marc Armstrong, chief partnership officer of PSG, said in a statement that embracing Socios.com and $PSG Fan Tokens enabled the club to interact with new global fans and generate significant digital revenue streams.

Socios.com CEO Alexandre Dreyfus said in a statement that Fan Tokens and Socios.com are playing an increasingly important role at the highest levels of sports.

PSG President Nasser said on Wednesday that the world would be shocked by the financial revenue generated by the club's signing of the global football star.

Analysts expect that PSG's signing of Lionel Messi will bring unexpected business revenue to PSG through jersey sales and other channels. When Cristiano Ronaldo signed for Juventus in 2018, his jersey sold more than $60 million in just 24 hours.

It is worth mentioning that in addition to PSG, Manchester City in the Premier League launched its own digital currency in March using the same technology.
