The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) has clarified that the Malaysia government has no involvement over the privately driven artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure project involving Skyvast Corporation and Huawei Technologies.

In a press statement released on May 21, the ministry emphasised that the initiative was not developed, endorsed or coordinated by the government, and it does not constitute part of any official government-to-government agreement or a nationally sanctioned technology programme.

While reaffirming the government's ambition to build AI-powered infrastructure to strengthen public sector efficiency and service delivery, MITI stressed that any such endeavour must undergo rigorous legal, operational and reputational due diligence.

"AI infrastructure projects of this magnitude must comply with the highest global standards and applicable laws," the ministry noted, highlighting the government's commitment to transparency, accountability and neutrality in line with international best practices.

MITI reiterated Malaysia's dedication to abiding by global export control laws, national security protocols and evolving regulatory guidance, especially those grounded in multilateralism and the rules of the World Trade Organisation.

The ministry also underscored Malaysia's sovereign right to craft its technology and innovation policies based on national interests, while continuing to support the global advancement of transformative and ethical AI applications.

The statement comes amid heightened scrutiny of AI infrastructure projects and foreign technology partnerships, reinforcing the government's position that national-level digital initiatives must be properly governed and strategically aligned.

MITI concluded by reiterating its role in positioning Malaysia as a hub for quality investment and competitive global trade, with a firm commitment to responsible technological innovation.
