American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) announced that it will be cutting back on some international routes during the second half of the year and into the first quarter of 2025. The reduced international schedule is due to the Boeing 787 delivery delays.
American (AAL) said the routes that it will suspend service on include New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Athens International Airport beginning on September 3, John F. Kennedy International Airport to Barcelona’s El Prat Airport beginning on September 3, Chicago O’Hare Airport to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport beginning on September 3, Philadelphia International Airport to Venice Marco Polo Airport beginning on October 5, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport to Dublin Airport beginning on October 26, and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport to Rome Fiumicino Airport beginning on October 26.
The U.S. carrier noted that it is proactively reaching out to impacted customers and would offer affected customers alternate arrangements. American Airlines (AAL) will continue to offer service on 55 long-haul international routes this winter.
Last week, Southwest Airlines (LUV) announced that it would stop flying to four airports in the United States and Mexico in a cost-cutting move that was also related to the Boeing (BA) delays. The Dallas-based carrier plans to end service and close operations at Bellingham International Airport, Cozumel International Airport, Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport, and Syracuse Hancock International Airport. Southwest (LUV) also plans to implement capacity reductions at both Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Chicago O'Hare International Airport as part of a network optimization effort.
Shares of American Airlines Group (AAL) gained 0.36% in premarket trading to $13.93. The airline stock is in positive territory for the year, with a gain of just over 1%.
