Further Weakness as Mercury Systems (NASDAQ:MRCY) Drops 4.0% This Week, Taking Three-year Losses to 65%

If you love investing in stocks you're bound to buy some losers. But the long term shareholders of Mercury Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRCY) have had an unfortunate run in the last three years. Sadly for them, the share price is down 65% in that time. The more recent news is of little comfort, with the share price down 43% in a year. Furthermore, it's down 11% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.

After losing 4.0% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

Mercury Systems wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

Over three years, Mercury Systems grew revenue at 2.4% per year. Given it's losing money in pursuit of growth, we are not really impressed with that. This uninspiring revenue growth has no doubt helped send the share price lower; it dropped 18% during the period. When a stock falls hard like this, some investors like to add the company to a watchlist (in case the business recovers, longer term). After all, growing a business isn't easy, and the process will not always be smooth.

It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. You can see what analysts are predicting for Mercury Systems in this interactive graph of future profit estimates.

A Different Perspective

Mercury Systems shareholders are down 43% for the year, but the market itself is up 23%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 10% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For example, we've discovered 1 warning sign for Mercury Systems that you should be aware of before investing here.

There are plenty of other companies that have insiders buying up shares. You probably do not want to miss this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying.
