361 Degrees International (HKG:1361) Stock Performs Better Than Its Underlying Earnings Growth Over Last Five Years

361 Degrees International(HKG: 1361)

When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But on a lighter note, a good company can see its share price rise well over 100%. One great example is 361 Degrees International Limited (HKG:1361) which saw its share price drive 160% higher over five years. And in the last month, the share price has gained 13%. But the price may well have benefitted from a buoyant market, since stocks have gained 6.4% in the last thirty days.

Since it's been a strong week for 361 Degrees International shareholders, let's have a look at trend of the longer term fundamentals.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During five years of share price growth, 361 Degrees International achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 14% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 21% average annual increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. That's not necessarily surprising considering the five-year track record of earnings growth.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here..

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, 361 Degrees International's TSR for the last 5 years was 183%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that 361 Degrees International has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 11% in the last twelve months. Of course, that includes the dividend. However, that falls short of the 23% TSR per annum it has made for shareholders, each year, over five years. Potential buyers might understandably feel they've missed the opportunity, but it's always possible business is still firing on all cylinders. Before forming an opinion on 361 Degrees International you might want to consider the cold hard cash it pays as a dividend. This free chart tracks its dividend over time.
