Investors in Olin (NYSE:OLN) Have Seen Stellar Returns of 129% Over the Past Five Years

Generally speaking the aim of active stock picking is to find companies that provide returns that are superior to the market average. And while active stock picking involves risks (and requires diversification) it can also provide excess returns. For example, long term Olin Corporation (NYSE:OLN) shareholders have enjoyed a 100% share price rise over the last half decade, well in excess of the market return of around 72% (not including dividends).

So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the five years of share price growth, Olin moved from a loss to profitability. That's generally thought to be a genuine positive, so we would expect to see an increasing share price.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Olin the TSR over the last 5 years was 129%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Olin shareholders are down 13% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 23%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 18% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Olin better, we need to consider many other factors. For example, we've discovered 3 warning signs for Olin that you should be aware of before investing here.
