Los Angeles and long Beach, the largest ports in the United States, announced on Monday that they would once again postpone plans to impose fines on ocean carriers that failed to transport containers out of the port as soon as possible. the reason is that recent progress has been made in dealing with the backlog of cargo ships and containers off the coast of California.
The two ports, which account for 40 per cent of seaborne cargo entering the US, are working around the clock to solve the problem of container congestion, in part due to the global shutdown after the COVID-19 outbreak.
The executive directors of Los Angeles and long beach ports said in a joint statement Monday that the amount of cargo stranded at these ports has decreased by 37% since the new charges were announced on Oct. 25. The port board will continue to monitor progress and reassess whether to impose the fee on Monday, December 13.
