International stocks trading in New York closed higher on Friday.
The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts improved 0.3% to 161.05. The European index improved 0.2% to 142.49. The Asian index rose 0.4% to 216.79. The Latin American index rose 0.7% to 186.91. And the emerging-markets index rose 0.5% to 359.81.
Energy companies were among those whose ADRs traded actively.
Oil prices rose to a seven-year high this week. A crimp in the supply of oil has pushed prices higher for weeks and the resumption of travel and economic activity has led to more oil usage. Among the companies whose ADRs rose were BP PLC, up 2.3% to $28.87; Eni Spa rose 2.2% to $27.46; Royal Dutch Shell PLC's Class B ADRs improved 1% to $46.47; and TotalEnergies SE improved 1% to $50.12.
AstraZeneca PLC's ADRs closed 0.4% higher at $60.61 after the company said an experimental asthma drug it is developing with Amgen Inc. has been given an orphan drug designation as a treatment for eosinophilic esophagitis, a rare inflammatory disease. The Food and Drug Administration is expected to decide whether to approve the investigational therapy, tezepelumab, for asthma in the first three months of 2022.
