Egypt's "Al-Ahram" online website reported on May 29 local time that after a six-day trial on the compensation case of the cargo ship "long Gift" that blocked the Suez Canal in March, the Egyptian Economic Court of Ismailia adjourned on May 29 and announced that it would hold another hearing on June 20 so that the two sides could further negotiate the amount of compensation.

At the request of the Suez Canal Authority and the shipowner's lawyer, the Ismailia Economic Court postponed the first-instance hearing to June 20.

Lawyer Chuan Dongfang said that the purpose of postponing the trial is to provide more time for both parties so that the issue of the detention of the long Gift can be resolved in a friendly manner.

At the request of the Suez Canal Authority, the Ismailia Economic Court ordered in April that the long Grant be detained until it met the Suez Canal Authority's claim for compensation. At present, the Suez Canal Authority has reduced the amount of compensation to 550 million US dollars, and after the initial compensation of 200 million US dollars, the "long Gift" can leave the Suez Canal, and the remaining compensation can be paid in installments. On the other hand, Shipping Oriental only agreed to pay US $150 million in compensation, and the two sides have so far failed to agree on the amount of compensation because of the huge difference.

The cargo ship Changzhi ran aground on the Suez Canal on March 23, suspending the canal for six days. At present, the freighter "Changzhi" has been detained by the Suez Canal Authority in the waters of Dagu Lake. (front desk reporter Wu Aimin)
