Looking at Gibraltar Industries, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:ROCK ) insider transactions over the last year, we can see that insiders were net sellers. That is, there were more number of shares sold by insiders than there were purchased.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

It is worth noting that this sale was 100% of James Nish's holding. James Nish was the only individual insider to sell over the last year.

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Gibraltar Industries insiders own about US$19m worth of shares. That equates to 0.8% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

The fact that there have been no Gibraltar Industries insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us.
