Insiders At Expeditors International of Washington Sold US$5.1m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

Over the past year, many Expeditors International of Washington, Inc. (NYSE:EXPD) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying versus if they selling is usually more beneficial, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Expeditors International of Washington Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The President, Jeffrey Musser, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$3.3m worth of shares at a price of US$111 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$114. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. This single sale was just 12% of Jeffrey Musser's stake.

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders.
