Many Xylem Inc. (NYSE:XYL) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying versus if they selling is usually more beneficial, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Xylem Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Senior VP and President of Europe, Hayati Yarkadas, sold US$1.2m worth of shares at a price of US$128 per share. That means that even when the share price was slightly below the current price of US$129, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. This single sale was 65% of Hayati Yarkadas's stake.

Insiders At Xylem Have Sold Stock Recently

The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of Xylem shares. In total, insiders sold US$3.1m worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. In light of this it's hard to argue that all the insiders think that the shares are a bargain.

Insider Ownership Of Xylem

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It's great to see that Xylem insiders own 0.6% of the company, worth about US$198m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

Insiders sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. And there weren't any purchases to give us comfort, over the last year. But since Xylem is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this.
