We're definitely into long term investing, but some companies are simply bad investments over any time frame. We really hate to see fellow investors lose their hard-earned money. For example, we sympathize with anyone who was caught holding AMC Networks Inc. (NASDAQ:AMCX) during the five years that saw its share price drop a whopping 80%. And some of the more recent buyers are probably worried, too, with the stock falling 29% in the last year. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 37% in the last three months.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the five years over which the share price declined, AMC Networks' earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 8.4% each year. Readers should note that the share price has fallen faster than the EPS, at a rate of 27% per year, over the period. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, in the past. The low P/E ratio of 2.35 further reflects this reticence.

The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. This free interactive report on AMC Networks' earnings, revenue and cash flow is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 33% in the last year, AMC Networks shareholders lost 29%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 12% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For instance, we've identified 3 warning signs for AMC Networks (2 are a bit concerning) that you should be aware of.
