In the last year, many Noble Corporation Plc (NYSE:NE) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Check out our latest analysis for Noble

Noble Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the President, Robert Eifler, for US$2.0m worth of shares, at about US$40.21 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$42.58, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was only 23% of Robert Eifler's holding.

Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 31.44k shares worth US$1.3m. On the other hand they divested 112.03k shares, for US$4.5m. Over the last year we saw more insider selling of Noble shares, than buying. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Insider Ownership Of Noble

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Noble insiders own about US$53m worth of shares. That equates to 0.9% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
