Insiders At Range Resources Sold US$14m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

レンジ・リソーシズの関係者が株式を1,400万ドルで売却し、潜在的な弱点を示唆。

The fact that multiple Range Resources Corporation (NYSE:RRC) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Range Resources

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive VP & CFO, Mark Scucchi, for US$4.2m worth of shares, at about US$27.39 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$33.72. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. It is worth noting that this sale was 51% of Mark Scucchi's holding.

In the last year Range Resources insiders didn't buy any company stock. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Insiders At Range Resources Have Sold Stock Recently

The last three months saw significant insider selling at Range Resources. In total, Senior VP Dori Ginn dumped US$1.9m worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. This may suggest that some insiders think that the shares are not cheap.

Insider Ownership

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Range Resources insiders own 1.7% of the company, currently worth about US$139m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
