Investors One-year Losses Continue as Angang Steel (HKG:347) Dips a Further 8.1% This Week, Earnings Continue to Decline
Even the best stock pickers will make plenty of bad investments. Anyone who held Angang Steel Company Limited (HKG:347) over the last year knows what a loser feels like. The share price has slid 61% in that time. At least the damage isn't so bad if you look at the last three years, since the stock is down 22% in that time. Furthermore, it's down 27% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders. Of course, this share price action may well have been influenced by the 11% decline in the broader market, throughout the period.
With the stock having lost 8.1% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Unfortunately Angang Steel reported an EPS drop of 49% for the last year. We note that the 61% share price drop is very close to the EPS drop. So it seems that the market sentiment has not changed much, despite the weak results. Rather, the share price is remains a similar multiple of the EPS, suggesting the outlook remains the same.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).
SEHK:347 Earnings Per Share Growth September 21st 2022We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here..
What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Angang Steel's TSR for the last 1 year was -58%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
We regret to report that Angang Steel shareholders are down 58% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 19%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 8% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Angang Steel better, we need to consider many other factors. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for Angang Steel you should be aware of.
