GoPro (NASDAQ:GPRO Shareholders Incur Further Losses as Stock Declines 7.6% This Week, Taking Five-year Losses to 50%
Ideally, your overall portfolio should beat the market average. But even the best stock picker will only win with some selections. So we wouldn't blame long term GoPro, Inc. (NASDAQ:GPRO) shareholders for doubting their decision to hold, with the stock down 50% over a half decade. And it's not just long term holders hurting, because the stock is down 40% in the last year. Even worse, it's down 13% in about a month, which isn't fun at all. However, we note the price may have been impacted by the broader market, which is down 7.2% in the same time period.
With the stock having lost 7.6% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
GoPro became profitable within the last five years. Most would consider that to be a good thing, so it's counter-intuitive to see the share price declining. Other metrics may better explain the share price move.
The revenue decline of 3.0% isn't too bad. But if the market expected durable top line growth, then that could explain the share price weakness.
The graphic below depicts how earnings and revenue have changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).
NasdaqGS:GPRO Earnings and Revenue Growth September 20th 2022It is of course excellent to see how GoPro has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. Take a more thorough look at GoPro's financial health with this free report on its balance sheet.
A Different Perspective
While the broader market lost about 15% in the twelve months, GoPro shareholders did even worse, losing 40%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 8% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
