NasdaqGS:FIZZ Earnings and Revenue History September 16th 2022Zooming In On National Beverage's Earnings
One key financial ratio used to measure how well a company converts its profit to free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio. To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.
Over the twelve months to July 2022, National Beverage recorded an accrual ratio of 0.27. We can therefore deduce that its free cash flow fell well short of covering its statutory profit. In fact, it had free cash flow of US$90m in the last year, which was a lot less than its statutory profit of US$140.2m. National Beverage's free cash flow actually declined over the last year, but it may bounce back next year, since free cash flow is often more volatile than accounting profits.
That might leave you wondering what analysts are forecasting in terms of future profitability. Luckily, you can click here to see an interactive graph depicting future profitability, based on their estimates.
Our Take On National Beverage's Profit Performance
National Beverage didn't convert much of its profit to free cash flow in the last year, which some investors may consider rather suboptimal. Because of this, we think that it may be that National Beverage's statutory profits are better than its underlying earnings power. Nonetheless, it's still worth noting that its earnings per share have grown at 11% over the last three years. Of course, we've only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors. If you'd like to know more about National Beverage as a business, it's important to be aware of any risks it's facing. For instance, we've identified 3 warning signs for National Beverage (1 doesn't sit too well with us) you should be familiar with.
Today we've zoomed in on a single data point to better understand the nature of National Beverage's profit. But there are plenty of other ways to inform your opinion of a company.
