Raffles Medical Group (SGX:BSL) Stock Performs Better Than Its Underlying Earnings Growth Over Last Three Years
Raffles Medical Group (SGX:BSL) Stock Performs Better Than Its Underlying Earnings Growth Over Last Three Years
One simple way to benefit from the stock market is to buy an index fund. But if you choose individual stocks with prowess, you can make superior returns. Just take a look at Raffles Medical Group Ltd (SGX:BSL), which is up 44%, over three years, soundly beating the market decline of 8.0% (not including dividends). On the other hand, the returns haven't been quite so good recently, with shareholders up just 1.6% , including dividends .
After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During three years of share price growth, Raffles Medical Group achieved compound earnings per share growth of 15% per year. We don't think it is entirely coincidental that the EPS growth is reasonably close to the 13% average annual increase in the share price. That suggests that the market sentiment around the company hasn't changed much over that time. Au contraire, the share price change has arguably mimicked the EPS growth.
The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).
SGX:BSL Earnings Per Share Growth August 30th 2022It's good to see that there was some significant insider buying in the last three months. That's a positive. That said, we think earnings and revenue growth trends are even more important factors to consider. Dive deeper into the earnings by checking this interactive graph of Raffles Medical Group's earnings, revenue and cash flow.
What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Raffles Medical Group, it has a TSR of 55% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Raffles Medical Group shareholders gained a total return of 1.6% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. If we look back over five years, the returns are even better, coming in at 8% per year for five years. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market.
