The majority of those shorting the yen are actually Japanese investors—many of them borrow yen to sell it short, convert into higher-yielding U.S. dollars, and then invest in U.S. Treasuries or equities. If Japan hikes rates, these investors will rush to buy back yen immediately to avoid massive losses. For example, if the exchange rate was 160 yen per dollar when they converted, but after the rate hike it drops to 150 yen per dollar, that 10-yen difference would hurt. So, as the saying goes: whoever’s interests are affected is the one who panics. From my observations, I’ve realized I’m effectively long the yen—that is, I’m short USD/JPY—because I’m long NZD/USD. But don’t worry, my trading cycle is just two hours; I take a break every two hours. By 'break,' I mean holding cash and observing the market.
