(Kuala Lumpur, 26th report) Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul said that under the U.S.-Malaysia Reciprocal Trade Agreement, the United States has agreed to exempt up to 1,711 tariff lines, covering key export products such as palm oil, rubber products, cocoa products, aircraft parts, and pharmaceuticals.
He stated that the U.S. has agreed to reduce tariffs on Malaysian exports from 25% to 19%, and this agreement will not affect Malaysia's sovereignty.
He noted that the exports of these exempted products amount to USD 52 billion (approximately MYR 248 billion), accounting for 12% of Malaysia's total exports to the United States. This will help ensure Malaysia's continued competitiveness in the U.S. market.
Speaking at a press conference in the ASEAN Summit media room, he said that with the reduction in U.S. import tariffs, high-quality American products such as medical devices, IT hardware, and machinery components will enter the Malaysian market more easily and competitively. This will not only allow businesses and consumers to access high-quality goods at more affordable prices but also enable SMEs and manufacturers to acquire advanced production inputs at lower costs.
For instance, Malaysian manufacturers can adopt American high-tech machinery, aerospace components, and automation equipment on a wider scale as production inputs, thereby enhancing production efficiency and industrial value-added, in line with the transformation goals outlined in the New Industrial Blueprint 2030.
