Denison Mines and joint venture partner Orano Canada said Wednesday that they will restart uranium mining operations in the Athabasca Basin region in northern Saskatchewan amid improving project and commodity economics.
The two companies said that mining will use the JV's patented surface access borehole resource extraction method of mining, a proprietary mining method designed to extract high-grade Athabasca Basin uranium ores from the surface.
Mining at McClean Lake was originally suspended in 2008 due to a decline in uranium prices, but the companies said that their method supported lower incentive prices than current uranium prices, which prompted them to restart mining there.
The JV intends to begin mining the deposit in 2025 with a target of about 800,000 pounds of uranium that year, while this year will primarily be focused on preparing the site and equipment for continuous commercial operations and installing new pilot holes.![]()
