What's up with Google?
Google is not participating in this AI rally and we are all left wondering why. In fact it just did a double top with its 2021/22 high and is down 15% already.
Back in 2017, some Google researchers wrote a paper that changed the game of AI forever. It was called "Attention is all you need" and it introduced a new way of building AI models using something called Transformers (no not that one). These models were so powerful and versatile that they could do anything from natural language processing to computer vision to music generation. Because it was open source, everyone and their mother started using Transformers for their AI projects, including Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic.
And Google? They've been playing catch-up ever since. I have always wondered why they just gave away their secret sauce for free? 71351613 : it is they never found a way to commercialize it to fit with everything else they do. they organized their business around you paying attention to advertisers not chatting with bots. if anyone can figure out how bots can sell more advertising, and double their revenue in 10 years, i want that person to be CEO, otherwise it is just the same old Google

102461859 71351613: i think they r trying to use ai to enhance their overall ecosystem, to help them better diversify into other areas like their fast growing cloud. Bots atm r hard to beat good old google search, unless the ai models now are capable of ingesting whole of Internet constantly and doing inference concurrently. First step is already achieved by Google search, and they took a step further to categorize the search results, jus no inference.
102461859 : i do not think google is playing catch up, their deepmind is the most forth front in ai researches, they r way ahead technologically, a fact that elon musk acknowledged when he was in open ai. Its jus the execution screw up, i believe the ceo is largely to be blamed. Short sighted and showed no leadership qualities, the day he gets sack is the day googl stock will fly
