HOW’S LAST WEEK HITTING YOU?
10% Canada-U.S. Tariff Tensions – Upping the Ante
Over the weekend, PM Mark Carney said he’d apologised to Donald Trump for that Ontario ad quoting Ronald Reagan to slam tariffs. Trump wasn’t appeased — he froze talks with Canada and repeated his 10 % tariff threat.
The headline hit CAD, with traders re-pricing risk in steel, autos, and lumber. No tariffs yet, but the chill is back. Similar headlines earlier this year briefly knocked TSX futures before markets steadied.
For investors, it’s less about politics than uncertainty: one surprise headline could move the loonie or TSX faster than any data release.
BoC Signals – Easings May Be Done
The Bank of Canada went ahead with another 25-bp trim last week, bringing the policy rate down to 2.25%.
Markets saw it not as the start of a new easing run but a likely “one-and-done.” Swaps now price less than a 20% chance of another cut in December — a sign policymakers think they’ve done enough.
The loonie firmed, bond yields hit a floor, and rate-sensitive stocks like REITs and utilities may lose steam. Value and earnings-driven names could take the spotlight instead.
Bottom line: the BoC’s easing cycle looks nearly done — and investors may need to shift focus back to fundamentals. ![]()

71899580 : Will CNQ or Enbridge’s dividends steady investors amid rate cuts? Yes. investors would invest more and more money into Enbridge and CNQ. Rate-cutting of BoC makes the investor “Have No Choice” but invest in CNQ & ENG. More and more money will come to energy market.

Antonio Sze-To : While CNQ and ENB may pay the dividend, which is highly likely, investors may risk lossing their principal. CNQ is in a down trend, and ENB has pumped so much. Is it still a good time to invest in these stocks?

JFungster : High dividend yield stocks are becoming harder and harder to find since the rate cut cycle has started. I would like to see the dividend yield for $Enbridge Inc (ENB.CA)$ stock to get above 6% before considering. I also have my eyes on $TELUS Corp (T.CA)$ which gives the highest yield (8%+) among blue chip stocks on TSX.
