Weekly Buzz | All-Time Highs From Earnings Blowouts
As the U.S. goes into Super Bowl Weekend and China celebrates the new year, the S&P 500 is closing above the 5,000 level for the first time. The rally has been fueled by continued strong corporate earnings and signs of progress in the Federal Reserve's goal of lowering inflation that could move policymakers to finally start cutting rates.
The $S&P 500 Index(.SPX.US)$ rose 1.37% this week, while the $NASDAQ 100 Index(.NDX.US)$ gained 2.31%. The $Dow Jones Industrial Average(.DJI.US)$ finished the week up just 0.04%.
The S&P 500 and Dow Jones reached all-time highs multiple times this week, edged on by earnings in the tech sector. Investors were wary of the regional banking sector despite pleas from $New York Community Bancorp(NYCB.US)$ leaders that they were still solvent following a bad earnings report.
This week, Fed speakers reiterated Powell's Sunday moments on 60 Minutes: rates would stay high until inflation securely lowered, and a March cut was unlikely.
With the second half of earnings season in full swing, the major standouts have been Palantir and Arm, both showing strength for AI tech and hardware, jumping 50% and 60% in the days following their reports.

  • 102362254 : When evaluating a company's financial performance, Earnings Per Share (EPS) plays a critical role. It reveals the profit generated per outstanding share of common stock. However, it's essential to consider EPS alongside other key metrics like Return on Equity (ROE) and the Price-to-Earnings Ratio (P/E ratio) to make better investment decisions. These metrics collectively provide insights into profitability, value, and efficiency, aiding investors in making informed investment decisions based on a company’s earnings results.

  • SiaoAlarm : Every year you have to break through and succeed is the only US stockundefined

  • HuatEver : Given the volatile market and economy, many investors find it challenging to prioritise a specific important measure to gauge post earnings report.
Thus, I still prefer companies that consistently provide dividends to investors, offering a sense of stability and ensuring a good night’s night sleep 😴 amid uncertainty. undefined undefined undefined

  • ZnWC : There is nothing to worry about if you are investing in a fundamentally sound company. The short term volatility may not reflect the earnings. It's a good practice to read deep into articles about the earnings; don't just read the title and be affected by it negatively (emotionally speaking).

Always stick to your risk appetite and practice stop loss. You may also buy protective options for your upper (call) and lower (put) end - straddle option strategy. Short term volatility may be an opportunity just make sure you dyodd or know what you're doing. I don't short sell using margin or sell naked options which are very risky and can result in unlimited loss.

  • HuatLady : As a long-term investor, my focus will be on companies with a strong competitive advantage as reflected in their earnings reports. I seek firms that excel in both marketing and technical aspects, with a clear plan for maintaining their cutting edges. I value companies lead by superior management that consistently set ambitious goals, take decisive actions and propel the companies towards success. Examples of such challenging yet rewarding investments include $Apple (AAPL.US)$, $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$ and $Berkshire Hathaway 13F (BK2999.US)$

  • Dante69 : Holding AMD since $17

  • RSXY : Consider taking some off the table soon. Yes, chances of S&P to continue rising is high. There will be heavy shorts coming in, vice-versa.
The phrase “the market can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent” is happening as we speak.
Hence, bear in mind to adjust your portfolio’s weightage, book your REALISED profit.

  • 小trader : In assessing a company's earnings, I prioritize its forward guidance as the most critical measure. Forward guidance provides valuable insights into the company's future prospects, influencing investor sentiment and stock prices. Alongside, I also consider key financial metrics like revenue growth, earnings per share, and margins to gauge its current financial health and trajectory, guiding my investment decisions.
