Wall Street Today: Does Anyone Have the Cash for Stargates
The market hit an all-time high Wednesday afternoon, right after 12:12 pm, breaking 6,100 after a volatile past couple of weeks since the last high. News about $500 billion Stargates, AI monuments in the desert, alongside sometimes bickering commentary from Musk, OpenAI's Sam Altman, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella discussing whether the money is really on the table.
Nadella said, "All I know is, I'm good for $80 billion," talking to CNBC.
Just past 4 pm ET the $S&P 500 Index (.SPX.US)$ traded +0.61%, the $Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI.US)$ climbed 0.30%, and the $Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC.US)$ climbed 1.28%.
MACRO
So much for macroeconomics, this week is about the new political regime, and awaiting an FOMC meeting next week. There was a 20-year $U.S. 20-Year Treasury Bonds Yield (US20Y.BD)$ auction today, that saw bills gor for 4.9%, the second highest auction price in history since '23.
SECTORS
Wall Street Today: Does Anyone Have the Cash for Stargates
Oil closed trading lower Wednesday for a fifth day on Wednesday on concerns global growth will slow if Donald Trump starts a trade war by following through on threats to impose tariffs on imports from U.S. allies and adversaries, according to MT Newswires. $Crude Oil Futures(APR5) (CLmain.US)$ closed down US$0.39 to settle at US$75.44 per barrel.
Trump said on Feb. 1 he would impose 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico and a 10% levy on Chinese goods. Canada supplies nearly two-thirds of U.S. oil imports, including heavy crude.
Gold and silver climbed, and longer-term treasuries fell while the 2-year climbed. $Bitcoin (BTC.CC)$ fell to $104,000.
MOOVERS
$Oracle (ORCL.US)$ flew 6% Wednesday after boss Larry Ellison joined Trump, OpenAI's Sam Altman, and Softbank's Masayoshi Son in the White House to announce the plan to pour billions into AI infrastructure over the next four years, starting with an initial investment of $100 billion. Ellison said they already started building 10 data centers under construction in Texas and said AI would cure all diseases.
Elon Musk, not to be left out of the attention, said that the firms mentioned would have trouble coughing up the money in Twitter posts. Maybe he was just jealous they were not going to use Grok. After all, Musk is a half-trillionaire; maybe he could help finance a joint AI venture.
$Arm Holdings (ARM.US)$ flew 15% Wednesday, the highest among AI semiconductor-related stocks, in part after the news. $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$ climbed 3%. Arm led the Nsadaq 100 in percentage gainers Wednesday.
$Netflix (NFLX.US)$ reported quarterly earnings of $4.27 per share Tuesday and reported global subscriber additions 18.9 million, double most estimates. It's the last quarter the firm said it would report sub counts and its major beat sent the stock 11% higher Wednesday, the highest percentage gainer on the S&P 500.
$Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM.US)$ hit all-time highs today, buoyed by the talk of AI chips in America.
$Agilysys (AGYS.US)$ tumbled nearly 25% intraday Wednesday after multiple analysts cut the hospitality software company's price target following poorly received fiscal Q3 revenues and forward guidance.
Shares of $Viasat (VSAT.US)$ were trading 11% lower Wednesday afternoon, after the satellite communications company disclosed changes to its leadership structure.
$Home Depot (HD.US)$ announced new partnerships with $Uber Technologies (UBER.US)$ and $DoorDash (DASH.US)$ delivery services on Wednesday, expanding its one-hour delivery options for home improvement shoppers.
