The Dow-30, S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite rose Monday for a third straight session as select Big Techs like Oracle, CoreWeave, Micron and Tesla gained ground.
The $S&P 500 Index (.SPX.US)$ added 43.99 points (0.6%) to a 6,878.49 close, while the $Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC.US)$ gained 121.21 ticks (0.52%) to 23,428.83 and the $Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI.US)$ improved by 227.79 points (0.47%) to 48,362.68.
Macro
The key indexes rose in part on strength for Big Tech stocks, especially some artificial-intelligence names that have been trending lower in recent weeks after hitting record highs in the summer and fall.
Monday's noteworthy percentage gainers among techs included $NEBIUS (NBIS.US)$ (up 4.2%), $Micron Technology (MU.US)$ (4% better after earlier hitting an intraday record high), $Oracle (ORCL.US)$ (3.3% stronger), $CoreWeave (CRWV.US)$ (which added 2.2%), $Tesla (TSLA.US)$(1.6% firmer) and $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$ (1.5% higher). Big Techs mostly rose last Thursday and Friday as well.
Adding to Monday's positive mood on Wall Street, some large-cap healthcare/pharma stocks like Dow components $Merck & Co (MRK.US)$ (up 3.6%) also gained ground. That helped to offset losses for Dow member $Nike (NKE.US)$(down 2.5%).
Meanwhile, $Gold (LIST2110.US)$ and $Silver (LIST2093.US)$ set new all-time intraday highs on some weakness for the U.S. dollar.
$Gold Futures (APR6) (GCmain.US)$ rose as much as 2.1% to a $4,477.70-an-ounce record, while $Silver Futures (MAR6) (SImain.US)$ added 3% to a $69.525-an-ounce all-time intraday peak.
Both metals rose in part on a "flight-to-safety" move amid geopolitical tensions following word that the United States is pursuing another tanker carrying Venezuelan oil as part of a blockade against the Communist country's petroleum exports.
Additionally, U.S. forces struck alleged rebel Islamic State of Iraq and Syria targets in Syria on Friday in retaliation for a recent ISIS attack that killed three American personnel.
That said, cryptocurrencies traded mixed Monday afternoon after earlier generally seeing gains.
$Bitcoin (BTC.CC)$ was trading 0.1% higher at $88,380.01, but $Ethereum (ETH.CC)$ lost 0.3% to $2,981.47, $Solana (SOL.CC)$eased 0.9% to $124.43 and $Ripple (XRP.CC)$shed 0.8% to $1.90. All four cryptocurrencies had been trading in the green earlier on Monday.
Moo-vers
The "Magnificent Seven" stocks followed the broader tech market higher Monday and mostly ended higher.
Five Mag-7 names rose, led by $Tesla (TSLA.US)$and $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$ their previously mentioned gains of 1.6% and 1.5%, respectively.
Other Mag-7 winners included $Alphabet-A (GOOGL.US)$ (up 0.9%), $Amazon (AMZN.US)$ (0.5% better) and $Meta Platforms (META.US)$ (0.4% firmer).
Only AAPL (off 1%) and MSFT (down 0.3%) fell among the Mag-7 stocks.
Elsewhere on Wall Street, Monday's noteworthy percentage decliners included:
-- $Trump Media & Technology (DJT.US)$, down 10.4%. U.S. President Donald Trump's media company pulled back after rising 53.7% Thursday and Friday on word of plans to merge with fusion-energy company TSE Technologies.
-- $Netflix (NFLX.US)$, down 1.3%. The streaming giant eased on news that $Paramount Skydance (PSKY.US)$ has sweetened a tender offer for $Warner Bros Discovery (WBD.US)$, which has already accepted Netflix's $72 billion proposal to buy the entertainment giant's Hollywood assets. However, PSKY is taking a rival bid directly to shareholders. On Monday, Paramount announced that Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison – whose son controls PSKY – would personally guarantee $40.4 billion of PSKY's financing and any damages surrounding the deal. Paramount rose 4.3% on the news, while WBD added 3.5%.
Meanwhile, Monday's significant percentage gainers included:
-- Select space-related stocks. Micro-cap $Sidus Space (SIDU.US)$ soared 97.4% on a U.S. military contract worth as much as $151 billion for missile defense, while $Rocket Lab (RKLB.US)$ gained 10% and hit an intraday record high on a separate $188 million agreement tied to U.S. anti-missile systems. Other space stocks to gain ground included $AST SpaceMobile (ASTS.US)$ (14% stronger), $Intuitive Machines (LUNR.US)$ (up 11.7%) and $Redwire (RDW.US)$ (6.5% firmer).
-- Certain quantum-computing stocks, which rose on a combination of Wall Street's more "risk-on" stance Monday and rebounds from big declines the sector saw between October and November. Monday's gainers included $D-Wave Quantum (QBTS.US)$ (20% better), $Rigetti Computing (RGTI.US)$ (up 13.1%), $Quantum Computing (QUBT.US)$ (which added 12.9%) and $IonQ Inc (IONQ.US)$ (11.1% firmer).
