U.S. Retaliation Revives Oil Shock Fears: Is a September Hike Coming?

Wall Street Today: DJIA, S&P 500, Nasdaq Comp Fall as SKHY, SPCX, ORCL Losses Beat MU, INTC Gains

The S&P 500, Dow industrials and Nasdaq Composite fell for a third straight session Monday as U.S.-Iran hostilities combined with declines for Tesla, SK Hynix, SpaceX and other Big Techs to give Wall Street a mostly negative tone.
The $Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI.US)$ slid 307.16 points (0.6%) to a 51,839.26 close, while the $S&P 500 Index (.SPX.US)$ lost 14.41 ticks (0.2%) to 7,443.28 and the $Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC.US)$ gave up 12.17 points (0.1%) to 25,508.07.
The key indices fell amid weakness for key tech stocks like $Bloom Energy (BE.US)$ (down 8.3%), $Oracle (ORCL.US)$ (4% lower), $SpaceX (SPCX.US)$ (off 3.3%), $Tesla (TSLA.US)$(which shed 3%), $Apple (AAPL.US)$(2.1% softer) and $SK hynix (SKHY.US)$ (which lost 1.9%).
SpaceX ended at $119.85 – its lowest close since going public at $135 on June 12 – while Oracle hit its lowest intraday level since June 2024 during the session.
Such losses outweighed gains for select Big Techs like $Lumentum (LITE.US)$, which rose 4.5% after Barclays upgraded the stock to "Overweight" from a previous "Equal Weight."
Other tech stocks to rise included $Marvell Technology (MRVL.US)$ (3.3% firmer), $Intel (INTC.US)$(up 2.1%), $SanDisk (SNDK.US)$ (2.7% better) and $Micron Technology (MU.US)$ (ahead 1.9%).
$Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.US)$ also added 1.6% on word that it's readying a new rack-scale AI system called Helios as a rival to the popular Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin systems from $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$.
Adding to the market's woes, fresh U.S.-Iranian attacks and counter-attacks sent oil prices higher Monday.
$Crude Oil Futures (OCT6) (CLmain.US)$ rose 0.6% to $82.98 a barrel at last check on the New York Mercantile Exchange after U.S. President Donald Trump vowed revenge for Iran's killing of thee American soldiers over the weekend in airstrikes.
"Every time Iran kills an American Soldier they will pay for that killing many times over!" Trump wrote on social media.
Elsewhere in markets, cryptocurrencies rose as Bitcoin continued a choppy rebound from the $57,747.77 intraday low that it saw on July 1 – its lowest level since September 2024.
$Bitcoin (BTC.CC)$ added 1.2% to $65,230.06 on some exchanges as of about 4:30 p.m. New York time. That's its best level since June 2.
Meanwhile, $Ethereum (ETH.CC)$ gained 2.2% to $1,900.42, $Solana (SOL.CC)$rose 2.6% to $77.72 and $Ripple (XRP.CC)$tacked on 1.9% to $1.11.
Moo-vers
The "Magnificent Seven" stocks diverged from the broader market and ended Monday's session mostly higher.
$Microsoft (MSFT.US)$ (up 2.2%), $Alphabet-A (GOOGL.US)$ (1.5% higher), $Amazon (AMZN.US)$ (1.1% better) and $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$ (0.2%) all gained ground.
However, $Tesla (TSLA.US)$and $Apple (AAPL.US)$saw previously noted declines of 3% and 2.1%, respectively. Similarly, $Meta Platforms (META.US)$ inched down 0.02%.
Elsewhere on Wall Street, Monday's noteworthy percentage decliners included:
-- $Tempus AI (TEM.US)$, off 7.7%. The AI-powered healthcare firm fell on word that it's buying the roughly 88% of cancer-testing firm $Personalis (PSNL.US)$ that it doesn't already own for $16.25 a share. PSNL fell 13.3% to $13.34 on the news.
Conversely, Monday's major percentage winners included:
-- $AMC Entertainment (AMC.US)$, up 26.8%. The cinema chain rallied after beating analyst forecasts for its Q2 earnings and revenues.
-- $Archer Aviation (ACHR.US)$, 19.6% better. ACHR, which is developing electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOLs), rose on word of a partnership with privately held defense-technology start-up Anduril. The two firms plan to work together on defense and commercial eVTOLs.
-- $IREN Ltd (IREN.US)$, 19.6% higher. The data-center firm soared after announcing that it's signed $2 billion of new contracts with AI developers. IREN also boosted its 2026 ARR target to more than $4 billion.
-- $Circle (CRCL.US)$, which added 8.3%. The stablecoin firm rebounded from Friday's $58.68 intraday low – Circle's weakest level in five months.
