Good Morning Traders!
Friday delivered a punch to the guts the market was not expecting. Retail sales -0.6%. Michigan sentiment crashed to 51. Consumer inflation expectations ticked up to 4.3%. The S&P is still at all-time highs. Make that make sense. Good luck out there.
🔴 IN ONE LINE
Retail sales missed, sentiment cratered, and inflation expectations rose anyway. This week's retail earnings gauntlet (HD, TGT, LOW, WMT) is about to tell us whether that's a broad consumer pullback or a narrow one.
📉 KEY LEVELS
SPY: $778 pre-mkt | Prev close $777.88 | 52-wk high $779.37 | Support 771–774 | Resistance 778–781 | daily bull trend intact
VIX: 14.25 Friday close. Lowest level this year(2026)
WTI: $82.40 | Brent: $88.72
10Y holding near multi-week lows as bond demand firms
🔥 WHAT HAPPENED
📌 Retail sales -0.6% in July — missed the +0.1% estimate. This was the worst print in over a year. Autos -1.8%, gas stations -0.9%, nonstore/online -2.2% (partly a Prime Day timing shift). Strip out gas and autos and sales still fell -0.2%. This wasn't just cheap gas skewing the number like CPI.
📌 Michigan sentiment: 51.0 vs. 54.5–55.0 expected, down from July's 55.2. This was an 8% monthly drop that snapped two straight months of improvement. Expected business conditions fell 11% short-term, 17% long-term. Only 8% of consumers now expect income to outpace inflation.
📌 1-year inflation expectations: 4.3%, up from 4.2%. Ticking the wrong direction even as headline CPI/PPI cooled.
👀 STOCKS ON WATCH
🟡 SPY — Daily bull trend intact, holding near $778, just under the 52-week high of $779.37. Watch 771–774 as the level that keeps the dip-buy thesis alive if retail earnings disappoint. Personally I’m looking for buying opportunities as long as the bull trend says intact.
🟡 HD (Tue 8/18, before open, est. EPS $4.73) — Bias: Neutral/volatility. Housing headwinds already priced in by the Street; a beat is more likely cost discipline than a resurgent consumer. Consistent with the K-shape, not a contradiction of it. Just because Warsh doesn’t want to acknowledge the K-shaped economy, doesn’t mean it’s not there.
🟡 TGT (Wed 8/19, before open) — Bias: Watching closely, same morning as FOMC minutes. This is the highest-information event of the week. Target's discretionary mix makes its guidance the cleanest test of whether the consumer pullback is broad or just July's gas/auto noise.
🟢 WMT (Thu 8/20, before open) — Bias: Bullish, but read it correctly. Walmart is a trade-down beneficiary, a strong print here is a symptom of the K-shaped squeeze, not proof the consumer is fine.
📅 WHAT'S NEXT
Tue 8/18 — Home Depot earnings, before open
Wed 8/19 — Target, Lowe's, TJX earnings before open + FOMC minutes at 2:00 PM (9-3 dissent). First real test of whether "inflation easing" survives contact with this data. A bit of a peek behind the curtain if you will.
Thu 8/20 — Walmart, Ross Stores earnings before open
8/26 — NVDA earnings + Core PCE, same day
8/27–29 — Jackson Hole, Warsh's first keynote as Fed Chair on Friday
⚡ BOTTOM LINE
Retail sales missing isn't the story by itself, contractions happen it’s normal and nothing to really worry about. The story is a consumer pulling back while inflation expectations tick up anyway. That’s why this week’searnings are so important. They can give us some clue as to the overall viability of the gains the markets has made recently. Home Depot and Lowe's won't tell you much, housing weakness there is old news. Target is the real tell. Walmart strength would actually confirm the squeeze. As for Iran: gas prices are the one place it's actually showing up in the data. Everything else is noise, and a VIX at this year's low says the market's finally figured that out too. This week is basically high risk with a seatbelt, not high risk on a headline.
