Sony - Not just an electrical company!
This is a brand that I believe was and is still a big part of our lives.
From the Sony Ericsson smart phones to Sony PlayStation, and then to TVs, this brand is definitely humongous.
As the company released its latest quarterly results, here are some interesting things I took note of.
1. Better sales but worse earnings
Source: Sony Q1'23 results
Revenue grew 33% YoY due to significant increases in Financial Services, Game & Network Services, Image & Sensing Solutions, and Music.
However, Financial Services and Pictures pulled down the operating income.
Financial Services is actually one of Sony's most profitable businesses! It offers life, and non-life insurance, online banking, and also venture capital.
The significant change in interest rates affected the performance of the variable life insurance in Q1'22.
2. Sold 3.3 million units of PlayStation 5
PlayStation remains the timeless gaming console that still lives on.
Sony sold 3.3 million units of PS5 in its latest quarter, up 38% YoY.
Even in the age of cloud gaming, Sony raised its revenue forecast for the full year by 6% to JPY 12.2 trillion, thanks to the strength of its PS gaming unit.
