$SIA(C6L.SG)$ : Singapore Changi Airport marks its first full quarter, surpassing pre-pandemic figures of 16.5 million passengers travelled through our Air Hub in the first quarter of this year.
A 0.5% increase year on year compared to 2019. The airport handled more than 5 million travelers each month.
Changi Airport Group says that the strong traffic was boosted partly by Singapore hosting many musical concerts. (Taylor Swift Concert)
China became Chinese top market again, rising from 6th place last year.
This was helped by a mutual 30-day visa exemption between the two countries that began in February.
The Air Hub says that it hopes to continue this momentum.
Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat said that they have a tripartite with Singapore Tourism Board and Sentosa targeting and marketing to more Chinese tourists.
He said, "We also have campaigns with trip.com to bring in more Chinese tourists to Singapore."
At the same time, for many of these new flights, he thinks that Singaporeans are also very excited to re-visit China and/or visit new places in China.
Travel to these five cities in the region also showed strong growth year on year compared to 2019.
Travel volume grew by more than 10% with Bally's Denpasar, Manila, Taipei, Seoul and Shanghai.
Air Cargo also turned around for the first time after seven quarters of decline.
Volume increased by 14% year on year to 475,000 tons, driven by strong trans-shipment, especially, for flows with China.
Mr Chee said that Changi Airport is working toward its goal for full year passenger traffic, to exceed pre COVID-19 levels and is preparing for future growth.
Expansion of Terminal 2 was completed last year and construction of Terminal 5 is set to begin next year.
Mr Chee said that the first major construction tender for Terminal 5 was launched last month.
Construction of an underground link between T2 and T5 has also begun. When complete, the new terminal will be able to handle an additional 50 million passengers per year.
Mr Chee was speaking at the Changi Airline Awards saying that Global travel demand will continue to grow.
With the Asia Pacific region experiencing the most rapid rate of growth in passenger traffic over the next two decades.
We are planning and building ahead to ensure that the Changi Air Hub is able to meet this growing demand.
