$Qualcomm (QCOM.US)$ Qualcomm (QCOM) is one of the most controversial AI stocks right now.
Some investors see it as a "dying smartphone company."
Others see it as the next Broadcom-style transformation story.
My Current Rating
For your AI watchlist:
Rank Company
1 NVIDIA
2 Arista Networks
3 Broadcom
4 Oracle Corporation
5 Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company
6 Qualcomm
7 Coherent
8 Onto Innovation
9 Ciena
10 Rambus
Why Qualcomm Is Interesting
1. It Owns Edge AI
Most AI investors focus on datacenter AI.
Qualcomm is betting on:
AI phones
AI PCs
AI wearables
AI XR devices
AI robots
Automotive AI
Their thesis is:
Not every AI query should go to the cloud.
Some AI should run directly on devices. Qualcomm's Snapdragon ecosystem is positioned for this trend.
2. Automotive Is Becoming Huge
Qualcomm's automotive business continues growing rapidly and is becoming a meaningful diversification engine away from smartphones. Management has repeatedly highlighted automotive and IoT as major future growth drivers.
If autonomous driving and AI-assisted vehicles become mainstream, Qualcomm could become one of the biggest beneficiaries outside of Tesla/NVIDIA ecosystems.
3. They Are Entering AI Datacenters
This is the big surprise.
Qualcomm has introduced AI200 and AI250 inference accelerators and is pursuing hyperscaler datacenter opportunities. The company has also discussed custom silicon engagements with major cloud customers.
This does not mean Qualcomm will replace NVIDIA.
But even capturing a small portion of the AI inference market could add billions in revenue.
Why Wall Street Is Skeptical
1. Smartphones Still Matter
Around half of Qualcomm's business still depends on handsets, and analysts expect handset revenue pressure in some periods due to memory constraints and slower smartphone demand.
2. Apple Risk
Apple continues developing more in-house silicon and modem capabilities.
Losing more Apple business would be a headwind.
3. Datacenter AI Is Unproven
NVIDIA dominates.
Broadcom is growing.
Marvell is growing.
Qualcomm still needs to prove it can win meaningful market share in AI datacenters.
Qualcomm vs NVIDIA
Factor Qualcomm NVIDIA
Smartphones Very Strong None
Automotive Strong Strong
Datacenter AI Early Dominant
AI Software Ecosystem Moderate Exceptional
Valuation Lower Higher
Upside if successful High Very High
Risk Medium Lower
Qualcomm vs Broadcom
This comparison is important.
Broadcom already has:
AI networking
AI ASICs
VMware
Infrastructure software
Qualcomm is still building its next growth engine.
Today I would still choose Broadcom over Qualcomm because Broadcom's AI monetization is already visible.
My Long-Term View (2030)
If Qualcomm executes well:
AI PCs succeed
Edge AI explodes
Automotive continues growing
Datacenter AI gains traction
then Qualcomm could become a 2–4x stock from here.
The reason I don't rank it with NVIDIA or Arista is that Qualcomm is still in the middle of a transition. The opportunity is real, but the execution risk is much higher.
For your portfolio, I currently view:
ANET > ORCL > QCOM > CIEN
but
QCOM > CIEN in terms of business quality, profitability, and diversification.
