NVIDIA Sued by Writer Over AI Misuse of Copyrighted Works

NVIDIA has been sued by three authors claiming that the company used their copyrighted books without permission to train its NeMo artificial intelligence platform. Brian Keene, Abdi Nazemian and Stewart O'Nan said their work was part of a dataset of about 196,640 books that helped train NeMo to simulate ordinary written language, but was pulled last October "due to reports of copyright infringement. " and was pulled.

In a class-action lawsuit filed in federal court in San Francisco on Friday night, the writers said the removal reflected NVIDIA's "admission" that it had infringed on their copyrights by training NeMo on the dataset, and they are seeking an unspecified amount of damages.

The lawsuit drags NVIDIA into a growing number of lawsuits around generative AI. Other companies being sued over the technology include OpenAI and its partner Microsoft $Microsoft(MSFT.US)$ $NVIDIA(NVDA.US)$ .
