Alibaba and ByteDance are reportedly considering ordering NVIDIA's H200 chips following approval from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Reuters, citing four sources familiar with the matter, reported that Alibaba (BABA) and ByteDance (BDNCE) approached NVIDIA (NVDA) to inquire about purchasing its advanced H200 AI chip following the decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to permit the export of graphics processing units to China.thatto purchase its advanced H200 AI chip following the decision by U.S.President Donald Trump to permit the export of graphics processing units to China.
Chinese companies reportedly intend to place large orders for NVIDIA’s second-most powerful AI chip if China gives the green light, but concerns about supply remain, prompting them to seek clear explanations from NVIDIA., according to reports.
Alibaba and ByteDance did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Seeking Alpha.
On Tuesday, it was reported that China plans to restrict access to NVIDIA's H200 chips despite President Trump’s approval, as the country aims to achieve self-sufficiency in semiconductor manufacturing.reported. Chinese regulators have been discussing methods to allow limited access to the H200 GPU. Until now, the most advanced AI semiconductor that could be legally exported to China was the H20.
On Wednesday, The Information reported that Chinese regulators gathered representatives from companies such as Alibaba, ByteDance, and Tencent (TCTZF)(TCEHY) to assess demand for the H200. Citing sources, the paper reported that officials informed the firms that China’s decision would be announced soon.
Reuters, citing two other individuals familiar with NVIDIA’s supply chain, reported that very small quantities of the H200 are currently being manufactured as the company focuses on its cutting-edge Blackwell line and the upcoming Rubin series.
According to the report, Chinese companies are eager to purchase the H200 because their local equivalents, which are more suited for inference tasks, currently do not match the training capabilities of AI models.
The report highlighted that, according to Reuters’ review of over 100 bids and academic papers, top Chinese universities, data center firms, and organizations linked to the Chinese military are also considering acquiring H200 chips through gray market channels.
Reports suggest that as Chinese companies discuss the costs and benefits of allowing H200 imports at a time when they seek to promote sales of domestically produced AI chips by companies like Huawei Technologies and Cambricon, authorities may require purchase applications to be reviewed and use cases to be presented.

  • NOIR(のあ) : If the lack of reaction is attributed to the authenticity of the source, then the same would apply to the veracity of FT's news; however, it can be judged that there has been an overreaction to the decline in stock prices. Recent reporting, particularly regarding MARVEL, has been highly regrettable.
