Breaking News
Maybank IB cautiously optimistic about Malaysia's economy, equities next year
Maybank Investment Bank Bhd (Maybank IB) is cautiously optimistic about the prospect of Malaysia's economy and equities for 2024, driven by growth, fiscal reforms and economic restructuring. The bank said the stable political outlook and delivery of macro blueprint cum targets introduced in 2023 would also boost the country's economic growth. "Growth, fiscal reforms and economic restructuring are thus the three key deliverables by the government in 2024, in our view,” it said in a note today.
Palm oil reserves seen rising to four-year high
Palm oil stockpiles in Malaysia likely expanded for a seventh straight month to the highest level since April 2019 as production in the world’s second-biggest grower outstripped its exports of the tropical oil. Inventories rose about 1.2% in November from a month earlier to 2.48 million tonnes, according to the median of 11 estimates in a Bloomberg survey of traders, analysts and plantation executives. That’s around 8% higher than a year ago. Crude palm oil output fell about 6.2% to 1.82 million tonnes, the survey showed, the first monthly drop since June. Production was still bigger than November’s forecast for exports at 1.52 million tonnes – a 3.4% gain from October.
Manufacturing sector on gradual recovery path, say economists
The manufacturing sector is expected to be on a gradual recovery path in the immediate term, according to economists. In its report, Kenanga Research said the recent uptick in manufacturing PMI suggested a possible resurgence in the health of the manufacturing sector as the year draws to close, with positive momentum extending into 2024.“This is partly attributed to the potential upswing in the technology sector and China's gradual recovery, both of which are expected to contribute to an improvement in Malaysia's export performance moving forward,” the brokerage said.
IATA: Asia-Pacific airlines' air cargo volumes up by 7.6% in October
Air cargo volumes for Asia-Pacific airlines increased by 7.6 per cent in October 2023 compared to the same month in 2022, with carriers in the region benefiting from ongoing growth in international cargo tonne-kilometres (CTKs) on three major trade lanes. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) today released data for October 2023 global air cargo markets, indicating the third consecutive month of year-on-year growth with global demand CTKs increasing by 3.8 per cent in October 2023 compared to October 2022.
