Stocks Rally. Can Friday's Jobs Report Stir the Market?
Wall Street returns to action Tuesday after the U.S. Labor Day holiday on Monday.
The $Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI.US)$, $S&P 500 Index (.SPX.US)$ and the $Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC.US)$ will try to bounce back from losses they suffered Friday before the holiday.
Stocks fell on weakness for $Tesla (TSLA.US)$, $Lululemon Athletica (LULU.US)$, $Snowflake (SNOW.US)$ and other Big Techs.
For instance, Tesla fell nearly 6% Friday after the long-awaited premiere Thursday of its Cybercab failed to impress investors.
U.S. officials also announced Friday that they're opening a safety inspection into the self-driving vehicle, which lacks a steering wheel and pedals.
Lululemon and $UiPath (PATH.US)$ also sank more than 15% after their quarterly earnings disappointed investors.
Meanwhile, $Zscaler (ZS.US)$and $Planet Labs PBC (PL.US)$ fell by smaller amounts following their own earnings reports, while $Snowflake (SNOW.US)$ gave back 5.4% after rallying 16.6% Thursday on well-regarded quarterly results.
Such losses offset big gains Friday by chip and memory stocks and other Big Techs. Winners included $SanDisk (SNDK.US)$, $Cerebras Systems (CBRS.US)$, $Astera Labs (ALAB.US)$, $SK hynix (SKHY.US)$, $NEBIUS (NBIS.US)$, $IREN Ltd (IREN.US)$, $Marvell Technology (MRVL.US)$, $Micron Technology (MU.US)$, $Intel (INTC.US)$and other names.
Adding to Friday's overall negative tone, a stronger-than-expected August U.S. jobs report worried Wall Street.
The Labor Department reported that the U.S. economy created 162,000 non-farm jobs last month – way above the 53,000 that economists had forecast.
Some investors think the Federal Reserve will now feel free to raise rates at its upcoming meeting without fear of hurting the American employment market.
All in, the Dow industrials lost 0.5% Friday, while the S&P 500 gave up 0.4% and the Nasdaq Composite eased 0.3%.
As for Tuesday's session, look for earnings before the bell from $United Natural Foods (UNFI.US)$ and a few other firms.
And after the bell, watch for numbers from $Caseys General Stores (CASY.US)$, $ServiceTitan (TTAN.US)$, $Braze (BRZE.US)$and some other names.
Meanwhile, investors will be watching $Bloom Energy (BE.US)$, $Everpure (P.US)$and $Illumina (ILMN.US)$ on Tuesday. Late Friday after the close, S&P Dow Jones Indices announced that all three will soon join the S&P 500 index.
