Fed Raises Rates by 25bps as Inflation Stays Hot. What’s Next for Markets?
Wall Street will try to snap a three-session losing streak Thursday as investors weigh the impact of the Federal Reserve's first rate hike in three years – and signs that more could soon be on the way.
The $Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI.US)$, $S&P 500 Index (.SPX.US)$ and $Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC.US)$ all fell Wednesday after the central bank boosted its benchmark Federal Funds rate by 25 points to a 3.75%-4% range in a bid to cool U.S. inflation.
Fed members also released their latest "dot-plot" summary of economic expectations, which showed most of the central bankers expect at least one more rate hike this year. Some even forecast two.
Stock investors historically dislike Fed rate hikes and inflation signs, which can send bond and money-market yields rising and draw cash away from equities.
The $U.S. 10-Year Treasury Notes Yield (US10Y.BD)$ rose to as high as 5.02% on Wednesday, just slightly below the 19-year high of 5.041% it briefly hit on Tuesday.
Inflation and rate-hike jitters outweighed gains for select Big Techs, some of which rebounded Wednesday from losses earlier this week on AI executives' calls to slow down artificial-intelligence development to prevent the emergence of dangerous AI agents.
For instance, $SpaceX (SPCX.US)$ rose 5.2% after mega-investor Cathie Wood predicted the tech-and-spaceflight giant could see $10 trillion in space-launch revenues by 2030.
$Intel (INTC.US)$ also gained 4% after Reuters reported that the chip giant has held talks with $SK hynix (SKHY.US)$ about jointly building semiconductors in the United States. (SK Hynix gained a slight 0.02%).
Other techs to rise Wednesday included $Lumentum (LITE.US)$, $Credo Technology (CRDO.US)$, $Bloom Energy (BE.US)$, $Marvell Technology (MRVL.US)$, $Oracle (ORCL.US)$, $Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.US)$, $Palantir (PLTR.US)$, $NEBIUS (NBIS.US)$, $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$.
Still, the Dow ended Wednesday's session 1.2% lower, while the S&P 500 lost 0.5% and the Nasdaq Composite eased 0.01%. The three indices have fallen every day this week.
As for Thursday's session, investors will not only be watching how the stocks and Treasury yields do, but will also look for the latest news from the U.S.-Iran War.
$Crude Oil Futures (NOV6) (CLmain.US)$ fell as much as 4.6% Wednesday on the New York Mercantile Exchange after Washington claimed that a Saudi Arabian pipeline damaged in the conflict will soon reopen.
That said, there are no major earnings releases scheduled for Thursday.
However, markets will get U.S. economic indicators. Look on Thursday morning for August housing starts, August pending home sales, weekly U.S. jobless claims and the Philadelphia Fed's September Business Outlook survey.
