Michio Kaku on Quantum

Quantum Companies
Dr. Michio Kaku is a renowned American theoretical physicist, futurist, and science communicator. He is best known for co-founding string field theory, a branch of string theory that seeks to unify the fundamental forces of nature .

Early Life and Education
Born on January 24, 1947, in San Jose, California, to Japanese-American parents, Kaku’s early life was marked by his parents’ internment during World War II at the Tule Lake War Relocation Center, where they met and his elder brother was born . Inspired by a photograph of Albert Einstein’s desk at the time of Einstein’s death, Kaku became fascinated with the quest for a unified field theory. As a high school student, he built a particle accelerator in his parents’ garage, which led to a scholarship from physicist Edward Teller .

Kaku graduated summa cum laude in physics from Harvard University in 1968, ranking first in his class. He earned his Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1972 .

Academic and Scientific Contributions
Dr. Kaku holds the Henry Semat Chair in Theoretical Physics at the City College of New York, where he has taught for over four decades . His research has significantly contributed to superstring theory, supergravity, and quantum field theory. Notably, in 1974, he and Professor Keiji Kikkawa co-authored the first papers describing string theory in a field form .

Popular Science and Media Engagement
Beyond academia, Kaku is a prolific author and media personality. His books, such as Physics of the Impossible, Physics of the Future, The Future of the Mind, and The God Equation, have become New York Times bestsellers . In 2023, he published Quantum Supremacy: How the Quantum Computer Revolution Will Change Everything, exploring the transformative potential of quantum computing .

Kaku has hosted several television specials for networks like the BBC, Discovery Channel, History Channel, and Science Channel. He also hosts the weekly radio programs Exploration and Science Fantastic, discussing topics ranging from science and technology to environmental issues .

Awards and Recognition
In recognition of his efforts to bridge science and science fiction, Dr. Kaku received the Sir Arthur Clarke Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021 .
