Market Close: Dow Jones Breaks 40,000 Barrier

- By the end of the trading day, the yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury was about 4.37%, up roughly 3 basis points for the day.
- The yield on the 2-year Treasury was about 4.80%, up nearly 8 basis points for the day.

Commodities:
- WTI June crude oil futures rose $0.60, or 0.76%, to $79.23 per barrel.
- Brent July crude oil futures rose $0.52, or 0.63%, to $83.27 per barrel.
- COMEX June gold futures fell 0.39% to $2,385.50 per ounce.
- LME copper rose 2%, while LME nickel and lead rose up to 1.6%.
- COMEX July copper futures fell 0.96% to $4.877 per pound.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average briefly surpassed the 40,000 mark for the first time before closing lower. Thanks to the resilient economy, the Dow has been in a bull market since October 2022. After losing momentum in April, it rebounded on hopes of interest rate cuts and a strong earnings season.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq also hit record highs but closed down. The Dow has risen nearly 6% in 2024, while the Nasdaq and S&P 500 have gained 11% each. U.S. Treasury yields and oil prices also increased.
