(1) Not bet on earnings, buy-the-dip after the report
Tesla released its earnings after the market closed on October 22nd. Given the relatively uncertain predictions for this Tesla earnings report, smart investors chose to trade post-earnings.
On October 23rd, Tesla's stock opened 4% lower, with the intraday low at $413. This trader used weekly call options expiring on the 24th with a strike price of $445 to buy the dip, at an average cost of around $0.90. Tesla's stock rose significantly that day, closing almost flat and recovering nearly all losses. The trader closed all call positions the next day (the 24th) at an average price of around $5.08, realizing an average profit of 4 times.
(2) Short-term trading with weekly options
On the 24th, the trader executed a short-term trade on weekly options for Circle. He bought call options expiring that day with a strike price of $140 at $1.06 and closed the position intraday at $3.20, earning over 2 times the profit.
Additionally, the trader also conducted a short-term trade using Tesla call options expiring on the 24th with a strike price of $455. The buy price was around $2, and the sell price was $2.74, resulting in a profit of approximately 35%.
Strategy: To bet on near OTM 0-DTE options expiring ITM
Driven by news of IBM and AMD collaborating on quantum computing, AMD's stock surged 7% during the session last Friday. A trader from Malaysia bought 668 contracts of AMD weekly call options with a strike price of $240 on October 23rd.
The next day, AMD's stock surged 7% intraday, turning these weekly options from out-of-the-money to in-the-money. The option price increased from the purchase price of $0.882 to the selling price of $11.4, a 13-fold gain. This surge provided the foundation for the trader's weekly returns, ultimately securing them the top spot for the week with a 1305% return.
Conclusion: To buy slightly out-of-the-money 0-DTE options to bet on it expiring in-the-money is a practical short term speculating strategy, especially during extremely volatile periods.
