$Intel (INTC.US)$ saw the biggest trading in borrowed shares that were sold short as the stock jumped Tuesday to its highest level in 20 months, strengthening the case for bears to close out their bets against the legacy chipmaker  whose shares have more than double this year.
The stock rallied yesterday after Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim posted on $Meta Platforms (META.US)$'s Facebook that the chipmaker is boosting its investment by $208 million to make the Southeast Asian nation the hub for Intel's assembly and testing operations.

Intel's short volume almost doubled to 22.43 million borrowed shares, the most among stocks with a market capital of more than $5 billion tracked by moomoo. That represented about 13.4% of the total shares that changed hands Tuesday. Short volume rose rose by 9.73 million from Monday, exchange data showed.
That came as the stock rallied 8.7%, strengthening the argument for the bears to buy back the shares they sold short and avoid a potential squeeze should the gains continue.
Intel's increased investment in Malaysia could help reduce pressure on the company's supply chain by spreading production across more locations, Yahoo Finance reported yesterday. That news came after TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo posted on X in late November that Intel is expected to start shipping $Apple (AAPL.US)$'s lowest-end M processor as early as 2027. He said that could be meaningful for Intel.
"The significance of winning Apple’s advanced-node orders far exceeds the direct revenue and profit contribution from this business," the analyst said. "Although Intel will still be unable to compete head-to-head with TSMC over the next several years, this suggests that the worst may soon be over for the IFS business."

$Marvell Technology (MRVL.US)$'s short volume also rose to 3.41 million shares Tuesday, from 2.59 million shares. Bears who closed out their positions were probably spared from the pressure of having to pay a higher price to buy back the share they sold short after the stock opened  7.7% higher Wednesday, buoyed by CEO Matt Murphy's comment that the chipmaker's revenue could reach $10 billion in the next fiscal year.
Meanwhile, $IREN Ltd (IREN.US)$'s short volume  jumped more than five-fold to 12.32 million shares as the stock slumped 15% Tuesday after the neocloud company said it plans to offer $2 billion in convertible senior notes.

$Tesla (TSLA.US)$'s short volume  rose to 6.35 million shares, from 3.89 million a day earlier, while $Ford Motor (F.US)$, $SoFi Technologies (SOFI.US)$, $Comcast (CMCSA.US)$, $Bank of America (BAC.US)$, $Ambev SA (ABEV.US)$, $Stellantis NV (STLA.US)$ and $Bank Bradesco SA(prefer share ADS) (BBD.US)$ also saw higher trading in borrowed shares that were sold short.
